Chapter Fifteen
Lightning had replaced Antoniaâs blood. It crackled and squirmed as it moved through her veins. A slow-charging pressure was growing under her skin, and when it released, Antonia wasnât sure what that meant for her.
Would it kill her? Bring her untold bliss? Push her over the brink of insanity?
Antonia tried everything she could think of to distract herself from the odd sensations. Her training sessions lasted twice as long, and she doubled the number of times she did them in a day. When her worn body couldnât take any more punishment, she sought Arron and shadowed him, even when he was busy with her father.
She never made herself a nuisance, and Antonia ensured she didnât attract too much of her fatherâs attention. His tolerance with her would only go so far, no matter how badly he wanted to impress Arron.
Arron loved the extra time she lavished on him, and while his company was marvelous, Antonia felt guilty every time he flashed her a smile. What would he feel if he knew that he was a distraction? That as the days had progressed, sheâd seen less and less of him when she looked at him; his face replaced by Derosâ.
Deros.
Antonia hadnât seen him since Mr. Ignotus had sprung him on her at that training session five days ago. She had the servants spying on him to inform her of his actions, and though she didnât let it show, his improvement impressed her.
Heâd struck her as someone who wasnât used to working hard. He may have the body of a storybook hero, but good breeding had given him those gifts, not effort. At least him learning how to fend for himself meant Antonia wouldnât have to save him from any more knife-wielding fiends.
Several times, it had taken all Antoniaâs self-control to not hunt him down and observe his progress firsthand. Somehow, she knew the mundane training the elite guardsmen performed would be anything but when Deros did it. Watching him would be as exciting as the first movie sheâd seen and would make her condition even worse.
How she felt, that was his fault. While Arronâs company pleased her, he wasnât the man from her dreams made flesh and placed in her home. Deros had an unexplainable hold on Antonia, one that clouded her mind and twisted her heart. He was everything sheâd ever wanted and, also, the cause for all her problems.
This last thought was outrageous. Antonia might have dreamt of Deros for years, but heâd never appeared until now. How could she put so much expectation and blame on him? It was unfair and the most illogical part of this entire ordeal.
Yet, as much as she ached to caress him, she wanted to shake him until he answered the question she hadnât stopped asking since spotting him by the wall.
What the hell was going on?
Deros knew. Of that, Antonia had no doubts. Sheâd seen the awareness in his face when theyâd spoken.
Why hadnât he told her yet? Heâd made it clear he was as interested in her as she was him.
